ERIC's TE71 LEVIN 3TGTE
Eric is currently racing in the SS2000 class at Pukekohe, Taupo and Manfield race tracks of New Zealand.
The 1982 Toyota Levin coupe started out as a JDM early spec TE71 with factory 2tgeu 1600 EFI, T50 5-speed and T292 6.7" diff with 9" solid disks all round.
In the engine bay the 2TGEU was replaced with a 3T-GTE from a TA63 Celica GT-T along with it's W55 supra type 5-speed gearbox. TA63 struts were fitted to the front as well which have 10" vented disks. The diff received an AE86 corolla 6.7" LSD head with tightened clutch packs. Whilst this diff did the trick and never slipped, Eric has now upgraded to a Hilux 8" LSD 4.55 ratio rear with aftermarket 2-way lsd internals and rear disk brake conversion. The front brakes were then upgraded with Nissan Skyline 4-pot alloy calipers and Skyline disks on Toyota Crown 5x114.3mm stud hubs to match the rear and the new 17" wheels.

Drive mods:
The 3tgte twin-spark head was replaced with the Levin 2tgeu 11111-88260 (hemi) head which now fits the forward facing 2tgeu inlet plenum and has staight ports. The head also improves power with the n/a cams and less combustion chamber volume. The 2TGEU cams are now reground for more lift and duration and the valve stems welded and reground longer to take up the gap from a reduced cam base circle diameter. The outer valve springs were upgraded to harder ones whilst the valves were out. The 3tgte cast exhaust manifold was replaced with a steam tube custom manifold to suit a custom assembled Garrett T3/T4 turbo. The exhaust system is 3" from the turbo right through to the exit, just in front of the L/H rear wheel. On the intake side, the 50mm 2tgeu throttle was replaced with an early mitsi EVO 60mm throttle body which only two mounting bolts lined up, so it was decided to weld on an alloy adaptor plate to the 2TGEU plenum so that it bolted in. Behind the engine is a 4-puck ceramic clutch plate clamped by an RPM pressure plate rated to 450hp. The gearbox has been upgraded to a rebuilt Supra W58- close ratio unit. Up front is a Mitsi EVO intercooler plumbed in with 2" steel piping. For cooling, the TE71 radiator was replaced with the TA63 3TGTE one, then replaced with a side flow unit. The factory Celica 3TGTE oil cooler is retained. The whole shebang is run by a Link V1 programmable ECU using the 2TGEU distributor and a map sensor. On the last dyno tune, power was capped at 198rwkw (264rwhp) at 16psi due to having the factory 3tgte cast pistons inside. The first race day showed up problems with head/block sealing with a blown head gasket and cracked piston. After further investigation the block deck was found to be .05mm off flat and head had a hollow on #2 of around .03mm which is where the gasket blew. After getting things planed flat again, a fresh hone and new set of rings.. it was then back on the dyno for a power run to check over the tune. Boost was limited to 12.5psi for running in purposes and it still pumped out 190rwkw.

Chassis mods:
Eric has made all his own flares and body kit out of fibreglass for better aerodynamics and cooling... and to house those wide rims. Originally he was running 4 stud 15x8" Performance Challengers and 15x7 Cheviot Turbo's, but found that hand-me-down 17" slicks were much cheaper and easier to source from the NZV8 series race cars.. so 17" 5 stud rims are now fitted wrapped in 240 slicks (245/45/17) or 235/40/17 dot's.
Inside the car is all the usual MANZ approved roll cage, bucket seat and harness.
The car is under constant evolution... so who knows what happens next :) |
