This is a quick copy/paste of text from the toyspeed/ae82.net project threads of my fxgt. Layout and punctuation will come later. maybe.
Front brake upgrade
AE101 levin or trueno (non superstrut) front brakes into the ae82 fxgt conversion.
Not exactly a big difference in braking but if you have the parts laying around.. may as
well make use of them
2 ways of doing this using OEM brake components.
#1 : fit ae101 upright into ae82 on modified or custom ball joint.
parts required:
ae101 non superstrut disk 258x22mm disk. w/ 55mm locating hole)
ae101 non superstrut front hub with bearings
ae101 non superstrut caliper
a ball joint that fits ae82 lower arm and ae101 hub (ive yet to find one). Or, get the ball joint hole in the ae101 upright honed out to suit the larger ae82 ball joint.
The ae101 front hub/upright will bolt onto ae82 strut.
ae82 tie rod fits ae101 steering knuckle.
ae101 front caliper fits the ae101 hub and disk etc duh.
Use ae82 brake hose! due to the ae101 brake hose having a different locating shape to the chassis bracket.
ae82 or ae101 axle shafts can be used. (ae101 are equal length so are better apparently).
need wheels 14" or larger to clear the ae101 brakes
suitable ball joint to suit ae101 hub????
the lower ball joint is slightly smaller on the ae101 so the ae82 ball joint doesn't fit all the way into the ae101 upright. There's enough thread poking through to be able to tighten up the ae82 ball joint nut a little bit, but its still about 3mm short.
#2 : ae101 brake parts fitted to ae82 upright.
I'm going this route since i've fitted new wheel bearings in my ae82 hubs already
Parts to use:
ae82 upright
ae93 258x22 x54 disk
ae101 non superstrut calipers
ae101 dust shield (either C-sectioned and bolted on top of a trimmed ae82 shield or pull axle out to fit it).
ae82 brake hoses
The ae101 caliper fits the ae82 upright with correct offset to fit the ae101/ae93 disk.
The ae101 dust sheild bolts onto ae82 upright (need to remove the stub axle or
C-section the shield).
buy some new aussie spec ae93 disks which according to dba
catalogue measure 258x22 x54. theres many sizes so confirm correct size before
purchase! I bought some apparently gze disk (non superstrut)? off trademe of identical
size.
If using the ae101 disk it has a 55mm locating hole instead of 54mm therefore it'll be
floating on the axle (not good). Could try see if the ae101 stub axle fits in the ae82 hub housing.
it looks like it will, the axle flange is thicker on the ae101 but the offset is different to
suit this.
Rear disk brake upgrade using ae92 and ae101 parts:
ae101 rear brakes conversion into ae82 fxgt.
On first play with rear brakes.. i found that the ae101 rear disk brake parts swapped
over to the ae82 uprights but there's one rather important issue.. the ae101 caliper
wont fit ae82 caliper mount and the ae101 upright (with caliper mount) doesn't bolt in
either. The solution is to use ae92/3 rear struts with the ae101 hub, disk, backing plate
and caliper fitted to them.
Some more info on it can be found online at the following links
http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=142&highlight=struts+ae82+ae101+brake and http://www.twincam.info/index.php?showtopic=1063&st=0
Luck has it.. there was an ae82 (drum rear), ae92 gti-16 and jdm ae101 levin 20v sitting side
by side at my local pick-a-part. so was able to have a play with parts to see what fitted
and what didn't. also noticed a post in the ae82.net FAQ section detailing which parts
to grab so was on the right track at least.
some comparisons..
The ae101 upright will not fit an ae82 due to the trailing arm having an eye instead of a
fork. and also the lower control arm and stabiliser arm sitting in wrong spot.
Cant use ae82 upright due to wrong bolt spacing for the caliper mount.
ae92 upright can be used.. but the trailing arm bush (in the upright) needs to either be
shortened or pressed out and replaced with a custom size bush. the ae92 bush is wider
so won't fit inside the ae82 trailing arm. This is the path i took.
ae92 trailing arm will not fit ae82 as it's too long by 100mm or so.
ae82 hub is narrower by 3mm or so, due to having a thicker backing plate behind it to
mount the ae82 caliper to.
ae92 and ae101 hubs are same width (or within 1mm anyway).
ae82 strut has a narrower bolt spacing to bolt the upright to.
ae92 and ae101 are same bolt spacing for the upright.
ae82 and ae92 top spring perch have a different bolt pattern so will not fit into the other
chassis without slotting holes.
ae101 has a larger diameter backing plate than ae92. (the disk splash shield)
ae92 has larger backing plate than ae82.
ae82 and ae92 rear spring are not the same. ae92 has a larger diameter at the bottom
by 10mm or so.
ae82 spring will fit ae92 strut but is a bit sloppy... having the rubber
seat around it helps. but use ae92 spring for a nice fit with ae82 top cap.
These parts required to do conversion
ae101 dust shield (yes it's a separate part)
ae101 rear hub (55mm diameter locating hole for disk but steps down to 54mm for wheel)
ae101 rear disk 266 x 9mm
ae101 rear caliper
ae92 strut
ae92 spring
ae82 spring cap
ae92 upright/knuckle (the hub bolts to it)
ae92 trailing arm outer bush modified shorter to 40mm wide (fits in the ae92 upright)
ae82 brake hose (ae101 brake hose doesn't fit the ae82 chassis mounting bracket).
ae82 hand brake cables for disk (not drum version)
14" or larger wheels
